Whose Word Do You Trust - Man's or God's?

Gary Loudermilk

Not many days go by that I don't either read someone's post in social media or actually hear another person say something like this: "I know that is what the Bible says, but I think that is wrong and what I believe is the truth we should follow."

So what is your reaction when someone writes or makes a similar statement. I hope it is one of shock and dismay. My reaction is "WOW! Are you saying that you are now the new god and the One True Living God was wrong or just plain outdated?" Bottom line, I believe that those person's making such statements are commenting what the Bible refers to as blasphemy. In other words, they have replaced God with themselves. Proverbs 28:26 states it this way:

Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool,

but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.

The answers and directions that come from the minds of people promote technological advances and biological discoveries as the hope for our world. Others believe the answers rest in electing the right politicians and passing new legislation. Still others proclaim that hope is found in eliminating everyone that is not like themselves. The passage I just listed from Proverbs states that whoever trusts in these things is a fool. But, you might say that we have great plans. One other verse, this time from Proverbs 19:21.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man,

but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Sometimes as followers of Jesus we become a little like Charlie Brown that Charles Schultz created in his comic strip "Peanuts." We become "wishy-washy." One day we trust in the Lord and the next day we trust in man or our own thoughts. No wonder that many live with anxiety and fear. There is no stability in being "wishy-washy." David was God's instrument in the penning of many of the Psalms. In Psalms 62:8 David tells us how often we are to trust in God.

Trust in Him at all times, O people;

pour out your heart before Him;

God is a refuge for us.

In the weeks ahead we will consider some of these topics - Culture or Scripture; Is the Majority Always Right; Beliefs and Values; and Who Influences You. For now, I encourage you to daily, in all things, trust in the Lord and and His Word. Many are calling for your attention with ideas and plans that are contrary to what God's purposes are for our lives. Use discernment, pray, read the Bible, and put your trust in the Lord. Absolute truth exists in this world of chaos. That truth is in Jesus Christ and Him alone.

Live this week trusting Him at all times.
