In the realm of churches, the month of October has traditionally been a time for Pastor Appreciation. I was blessed to pastor four different churches over my time as a pastor. Each of those churches found ways to express appreciation to not only me and my family but also to the rest of our staff members. A card, a gift, or a verbal expression of thanks goes a long way in extending true appreciation.
I heard all the old jokes about preachers only working one day a week. However, the reality is that most pastors spend 50-80 hours per week in fulfilling all the responsibilities and ministry needs that exist in any church. From hospital visits to funerals to weddings to home visits to counseling sessions and sermon preparation or other staff duties, the hours really begin to add up. Most of the hours go unnoticed by the church as a whole.
I doubt that your pastor is complaining about his work load. I doubt that he has strong expectations that he needs a special time of recognition or appreciation. I am not writing this week because any pastors I know asked me to write this in the hopes you would respond in some specific way to them. Instead, I am writing this week's blog post because I appreciate those that give pastoral leadership in the church where we are members. I guess you appreciate your pastoral leaders as well. So rather than keeping those thoughts to yourself, why not take some time to share that appreciation with those who tirelessly serve you and your church.
To any who serve in a pastoral role that may be reading this - Thank you for all you do, not just on Sunday, but on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday also. While I have no authority over any pastor or church, I think a day or two off beyond regular vacation time would be greatly appreciated by the pastor and his family.
Just my thoughts this week about appreciating those who serve the Lord and serve our churches resulting in positive differences in our spiritual walk with Lord.
